I’d like to officially vouch for making sustainable yoga clothes a staple in everyone’s home.
Because even if you’ve never stepped foot in a yoga studio, I think having both eco-friendly fabrics and breathable and natural fabrics in your closet is the way to take care of your body and the planet.
After all, the amount of chemicals and fabrics that your skin absorbs just by it being touched is… surprisingly a lot. Scientists have studied that skin absorbed around 64% of water when placed in a few different exposures.
Knowing this, you might want to take a second look when you’re shopping around for some shiny new yoga, athletic, or, let’s face it, cozy, cute, and louge-y clothes.
I don’t know about you, but I’m not a huge clothes shopper.
Especially after purging my closet and home a la Marie Kondo, I’ve been set on keeping staple, solid clothes around so getting dressed is one less decision I have to think about.
Nonetheless, when I do need some good clothes, I want them to be all the good stuff because, well, it really matters.
As glamorous as the fashion industry looks in all those Instagram ads, it’s pretty detrimental to the planet. Water consumption, chemical dyes up against our skin, synthetic materials off-gassing, it’s not a pretty picture for our bodies.
That’s why I’m all about spending a little extra money to get just a few of the highest of quality pieces— the eco-friendly fabrics, the recycled materials, heck, even the biodegradable clothing if I find it.
The most important qualities I look for in sustainable yoga clothes are:
There are so many other things I could list, like biodegradability, sustainable packaging, certifications, and so much more! But as a plant-based, holistic girlie do prioritize the ones I mentioned I’m looking amongst the crowd of sustainable yoga clothes.
Prana has eco-friendly fabrics, fair trade practices, and styles that flow seamlessly from the studio to the streets.
From buttery-soft leggings made from recycled polyester to breezy tops crafted with organic cotton, every piece is designed to make you feel like a green goddess.
Plus, Prana isn’t just about looking good; they partner with bluesign®️ to ensure their production processes are as clean and green as can be. bluesign®️ has strict manufacturing procedures that are mindful of chemicals being used in fabrics, worker health and safety, and other sustainable practices.
My PrAna Picks
Last but certainly not least, let’s talk about Girlfriend Collective. This brand is all about inclusivity, sustainability, and making you feel like the goddess you are, no matter your shape or size.
They use recycled materials like plastic bottles and fishing nets to create their activewear, so you can feel good about reducing waste while working out.
What I love about Girlfriend Collective is that they have great staples. I’ve been all about making sure that I’m purchasing a few, quality, evergreen clothing pieces that I can mix and match with others and not get sick of.
Also, the idea of wearing yoga clothing as regular cozy work-from-home clothing? Yes. A thousand times, yes.
My Girlfriend Collective Picks
I always love supporting Etsy makers are putting their heart and soul into creating beautiful, eco-friendly pieces that are unique and made with love.
Etsy has A TON of different types of yoga clothing and styles. From boho-chic to minimalist or somewhere in between, you’re sure to find something that speaks to your soul on Etsy.
My Etsy Picks
Now, let’s unwrap the topic of sustainable packaging or the cherry on top of your eco-friendly yoga gear.
You know that feeling of excitement when you receive a new yoga outfit in the mail? Imagine that joy multiplied when you know the packaging is as kind to the planet as the clothes inside.
Traditional packaging often involves materials that are tough on the environment. Think plastics that can take centuries to decompose or papers that contribute to deforestation.
Sustainable packaging tends to be minimal. Brands embracing this approach know that less is more, and opt for designs that are earth-friendly and cute AF.
Recycled cardboard, no plastic, things like that. Keep these things in mind when you’re ordering, too! You’ll likely find this more common in Etsy compared to bigger box stores.
What’s your next sustainable yoga snag?
Will I see you in the next yoga class rocking some right on your very own self-care day?
