Creating a home studio that inspires creativity and boosts productivity is an art form in itself. As artists, we understand the power of environment in shaping our creative lifestyle and process. 💫

Sometimes, things as simple as powerful quotes about interior design (and life) can help me remember that I’m not alone in what I feel — that there’s a collective consciousness of creatives who are on the same path as us!

I hand-picked these quotes about interior design to help embody the essence of what your home studio style should be.

BTW, a home studio is the concept for creatives to make their homes cozy, curated, and conducive enough to give themselves permission and ease to create.

7 Quotes About Interior Design to Inspire Your Home Studio

1. “A house is much more than a shelter. It should lift us emotionally and spiritually.” — John Saldino

This quote about interior design beautifully encapsulates the ‘cozy’ element of a home studio. (The ol’ making your house feel like a home idea.)

Your creative space should feel like a sanctuary that nurtures your emotional and spiritual well-being. I say “cozy” because when you’re feeling cozy, you’re naturally more inclined to have less tension and be more comfortable embracing who you are. 🤸

This also encapsulates the “curated” element of a home studio — you need to be in a space that actually sparks joy for you! You should be able to look around your space and see colors, artwork, furniture, textures, fixtures that invoke a specific, positive emotion.

Imagine if your home alone could give you energy, excitement and creative inspiration?

2. “Design is so simple. That’s why it’s so complicated.” — Paul Rand

As artists, we often grapple with this urge to overcomplicate and overthink our work (and the process it takes to get us to create) forgetting that sometimes, simplicity is what we need.

I wouldn’t call myself a minimalist, and if minimalism doesn’t spark joy for you, then don’t do it. However, the idea still stands of leaning in on simplicity in different elements in your home.

This is why I always start with a simple color palette of 3-4 colors. That’s all. You don’t want to get complex in your colors or planning, or else you’re going to feel too misguided and overwhelmed to even start!

I also like to encourage eliminating the clutter, tchotchkes and trinkets as much as possible. Marie Kondo talks about alleviating not only physical clutter, but visual clutter, too. I have as few labels as possible shown in our house because it adds unnecessary cluttered patterns, colors, and words around my house where I don’t want it.

Simplicity is not the same thing as bland and boring. It’s about having a clear, precise look, feel, and overall plan for your space and sticking to that. We don’t want to get distracted by too many things, or else our vision won’t be realized.

(Sounds familiar to working in your art, doesn’t it? 😉)

3. “I am going to make everything around me beautiful. That will be my life.” — Elsie de Wolfe

As artists, I think we all inherently understand the idea of wanting to turn something beautiful. Why else create art than romanticizing the real-life version of it?

This might be one of the best quotes about interior design in my book because it’s speaks about every artist ever! We strive to create more beauty in the world, and we have every reason to bring this concept into our home studios, too.

So, what does “beautiful” mean to you? Is it a color palette, a style of architecture, a style, type of artwork, home layout? To me, something beautiful gives me a little flutter in my heart. If I’m on Pinterest and I feel that when I see an image, I know there’s something beautiful in it for me.

What gives you a flutter in your heart when you see it? Chances are, that has a space to be somewhere in your home studio. Is it intricate, vintage items? Is it adorable, painted pieces of furniture? A cozy couch with a thick, warm blanket and a glass candle next to it? Is it a deep green color that makes you feel like your home could be a garden?

4. “Style is a way to say who we are without having to speak.” – Rachel Zoe

Rachel Zoe’s quote about interior design perfectly encapsulates what we do as artists — we are here to communicate through our creations without saying one particular thing or another.

A poem, a song, a painting, a dance. These are all pieces of art that are meant to be graceful in the way we speak to an experience. So think about what you want your home to say to you. And more specifically, different rooms in your home.

I want my bedroom to say something different than my studio and my living room and my kitchen. What do you want your rooms to say?

  • You are warm, safe, and have permission to be fully yourself.
  • You are inspired, uplifted, and energized to create.
  • You care about the food you put in your body and make beautiful, healthful meals.

5. “Behind every attractive room is a good reason.” — Sister Parish

All art has a reason. It sparked from something. Maybe it was an experience, a fleeting moment, a word spoken to you. This principle is just the same in the concept of your home studio.

I love how much this resonates with Marie Kondo’s “Spark Joy” philosophy. She reminds us that each item in our space should serve a purpose or bring us happiness. If not? Then we thank it for serving its purpose (even if that purpose was to show us what we don’t like) and let it go.

When designing your home studio, consider the ‘why’ behind each design choice. That vintage typewriter might look great on your desk, but does it serve a purpose in your creative process?

If it inspires you to write or adds to the atmosphere you’re trying to create, then it has a good reason to be there. But if it was passed off to you by someone and you don’t feel that flutter in your chest when you see it, then it’s served its purpose wonderfully!

I’ve become a more mindful shopper because of this principle. If I don’t “feel the flutter,” then she ain’t coming home. (Also, I think I’m about to make #feeltheflutter a thing!)

6. “The details are not the details. They make the design.” — Charles Eames

This is a fundamental truth in both art and design: it’s the little things that often make the biggest impact. Just as the subtle nuances in a piece of music or the delicate brush strokes in a painting can elevate the entire work, the small details in your home studio can transform the entire space.

I find this to be true with songwriting, which is why it’s so wonderful to have STATiC as a part of She Sees Faeries. The songs would not be the songs without the details in his guitar-playing. They make up the vibe, sound, and total aesthetic of our music.

So, when you’re planning your home studio, pay close attention to the minutiae. The texture of your desk surface, the style of your drawer pulls, the pattern on your curtains — all these small elements contribute to the overall feel of your space.

This was something I remember reading in Marie Kondo’s book, too. The idea of using organic materials like wood and bamboo over plastic, even with the small things like utensils organizers. It doesn’t seem like a big deal, right? Especially when it’s hidden in a drawer?

But I promise you, you’re going to touch and treat things differently when they’re made of a material that’s high-end and purposeful.

7. “No pattern should be without some sort of meaning.” — William Morris

When William Morris says “pattern,” I think we can apply to multiple things in our home studios — patterns, textures, images, concepts, design decisions.

When I studied theatre, I was told that every single detail in a book, screenplay, television show, movie, had a reason. There’s a reason why the curtains are blue. There’s a reason why she said “Hey” and not “Hello.” There’s a reason why she looked back before she closed the door.

In your art and in your home studio design, you need to be intentional with every single thing you do, both for the visual appeal of your space and for your experience.

An unintentional, undesigned space has your eyes glazing over things, trying to mute yourself from the experience because it doesn’t spark joy in you. An intentional, inspired space gives your eyes joyful things to look at multiple times per day.

I’m not a scientist, but I can bet that your dopamine levels are higher when you’re in a home that you’ve curated with things you love compared to being in a home that you’ve put no thought into.
