the 17 best herbal teas that detox like magic

POSTED ON

I wasn’t always a big fan of tea.

In fact, I had a rule: I wanted my food hot and my drinks cold. I didn’t think about herbal teas that detox, or teas in general.

It wasn’t until I met STATiC and went over to his home for the first time. He had a tea bar, and I was totally wowed. It wasn’t just that traditional Lipton you get served on a plane— but beautiful loose-leaf teas in glass jars, showcasing their gorgeous colors. And when you opened those jars? Each of those scents had a beautifully unique note to them. 🍃

Ever since then, I’ve loved having different teas by my side (in fact, I’m drinking butterfly pea flower as I write this. 🦋 My have things changed!)

It wasn’t until months later that I realized teas had a purpose— a medicinal purpose. It’s easy to pop a pill here and there when you’re feeling a little bloated, but I wanted to change that.

I wanted the infinite wisdom of nature to guide me. And that’s exactly what I do with herbal teas that detox!

Teas have been used for centuries in traditional medicine, and for good reason. Detox teas specifically are packed with detoxifying ingredients like dandelion, ginger, turmeric, and green tea, all working together to support your liver, kidneys, and other detox organs.

They flush out toxins, boost your metabolism, and even help with weight loss!

Let’s dive into this a little more. Because, well, there are a lot of teas out there. And at least for me, it was easy to get overwhelmed.

Understanding Herbal Teas That Detox

Now, let’s be clear on something— these aren’t teas that make you skinny overnight.

That would be pretty weird!

Instead, these are teas that support your detox organs: your gut, liver, and kidneys, to name a few. Plus, detox teas are also great for supporting your overall health. They’re loaded with antioxidants that combat harmful free radicals, reducing the risk of chronic diseases and keeping you feeling your best.

How to Make Strong Herbal Tea

But first, I know that sometimes teas can be pretty mild compared to, say, a pill. So here are some ways to make the best herbal teas that are a little more concentrated with the good stuff:

  • Increase the steeping time. Let the herbs steep for a longer period to extract more flavor and potency. Start with 5-10 minutes and adjust to taste. I’ve had herbalist friends tell me to steep certain teas for at least 5 hours before drinking.
  • Increase the amount of herbs. You’ll need to know a little more about what you’re taking, but sticking two bags or scoops in there instead of one will certainly add more medicinal properties to your drink.
  • Cover the tea while you’re steeping it. This will help retain the heat to extract the flavors better.

My 2 Go-Tos When Picking the Best Herbal Slimming Teas

You’ve probably seen a million teas out there. I feel like I see more and more selections every time I go to Whole Foods. So, what exactly should we be looking for with these

☝️ Organic and/or third-party tested ingredients. Look for teas made from high-quality, organic ingredients. Organic teas are free from pesticides and other harmful chemicals, ensuring that you’re getting a pure and effective product.

✌️ Transparent brands. The first thing I do when purchasing most anything from a new brand? I check to see if they display their ingredients list in their product description. If they don’t, it’s my first red flag. I’ll head over to their website to see if they have any pages about their ingredients, sustainability, or knowing where their tea ingredients come from. If not? I’m pretty much moving onto the next brand! Brand transparency is huge, and is a great way for you to start checking the quality of your ingredients, detox herbal teas and beyond.

The 17 Best Herbal Teas for Detox

Here are my top picks (and favorite brands!) when picking herbal detox teas!

Green Tea

Green tea is often associated with detoxification through its antioxidant properties. It’s rich in polyphenols, particularly catechins like epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), which, for those of us who don’t know the long names behind the herbs, are powerful antioxidants.

Antioxidants neutralize harmful free radicals in the body— or things that cellular damage and aging. Green tea also supports liver function, and hydration, and is anti-inflammatory.

🍵 My green tea picks:

*Note: most green tea and matcha has caffeine!

Dandelion Tea

Dandy tea has a diuretic effect, increasing urine, which can help flush out toxins and excess water from the body. This process may also help cleanse the kidneys and urinary tract— certainly a great detox herb!

Dandelion root has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which may further support detoxification by reducing oxidative stress and inflammation in the body. These properties may also help support liver health, which is crucial for the body’s natural detox processes.

🌼 My dandelion tea picks:

Ginger Tea

Ginger contains compounds like gingerol, which has anti-inflammatory effects. It also aids digestion, helping our bodies eliminate waste and toxins more efficiently.

It also stimulates bile production, a digestive fluid produced by the liver that helps break down fats and remove waste from the body. This process is super important for detoxification. You need to get it out somehow, right? 😅

Turmeric Tea

Turmeric has an active compound called curcumin, which has a very strong anti-inflammatory effect as well as a potent antioxidant effect, too!

🧡 My turmeric tea picks:

Peppermint Tea

Peppermint tea is often used to soothe digestive issues such as indigestion, bloating, and gas. By promoting healthy digestion, peppermint tea may help the body eliminate waste and toxins more efficiently. It’s also known for its relaxing properties, which can help relieve stress and tension.

Additional Tips for Maximizing Detox Results

We could talk tea time all day, but I want to make sure you have the foundationals down, too.

Here’s how I continue to supplement my health on heavy tea days and tea-free ones:

  • Hydrogen water. We drink 8.0pH water at home from our water ionizer and love how we feel from it! This water has electrolytes and antioxidants from the hydrogen and is our go-to throughout the day.
  • Plant-based diet. With myself as a dairy-free vegetarian and him with a gluten allergy, we have a very clean diet at home! I remember feeling the difference in my body when I stopped eating meat when I was in college, then again when I stopped eating dairy, and again a few years ago when I stopped eating gluten. Sticking to whole foods and a more plant-based, gluten-free diet has been game-changing for our household. We have a lot of friends who have said the same!
  • Have a ride-or-die greens powder. I’m currently drinking Garden of Life’s Raw Organic Superfood in the morning, mixed with a little homemade pineapple juice that I make with my Almond Cow!
  • Use all-natural cleaners at home. We’ve switched our cleaners to solely vinegar and essential oils, hypochlorous acid (made with our machine), and Branch Basics!
  • Movement. This is one of my favorites… maybe because I was a former gymnast. Movement is so important to get things going. Because you could sit on your booty all day and drink herbal teas that detox all day long, but not much will happen. Hot yoga, Planet Fitness, and walks in the sunlight are all our BFFs.
  • Holistic self-care. Acupuncture, reflexology, deep tissue massages— all some of my favorite ways for self-care.

I hope you find an herbal teas that detoxes that fits perfectly in your lifestyle. Maybe it’s a tea you love to drink every morning, in the afternoons on your lunch break, or as a sleepy-time tea before bed.

Perhaps you love to use agave nectar, honey, almond milk, or just like to drink it plain. However you love it, take this little digital clink as a cheers to us. Enjoying our tea, together.
