Learning how to find your artistic voice is like discovering your own unique constellation inside of you. 💫
It’s a delicate balance between drawing inspiration from artists you admire, embracing your natural talents, and creating something that deeply resonates with others.
It can feel overwhelming and tiring when you feel like you’re chasing a bunch of different things to find that voice. But the amazing part? The more inspired action you take — aka, the more art you release — the closer you’ll get to it.
This video talks more about the importance of movement in your artistic journey ✨
Sweet friend, the process of finding your artistic voice is meant to meander! The journey to find your artistic voice blooms with every creative detour you embrace along the way — even if it may feel the complete opposite.
As a singer-songwriter and performer, I’ve learned that some of my most powerful breakthroughs came during moments when I completely let go of trying to force my sound and feel into someone else’s mold. I just let myself discover and learn as I continued taking inspired action.
That’s all any of us can do — take inspired action.
Because finding your voice as an artist lives in those sacred spaces of creation. It doesn’t happen by sitting around and thinking about what you want your art to feel like, who you want your fans to be, and the unique magnetism you want to bring.
It comes in between late-night sessions, moments of wild inspiration, and all the actions you’re taking to “keep going” in your art.

That nagging voice in your head telling you that you’re behind, that you should have figured it all out by now? I hear it too.
So many artists believe these sneaky little myths about finding their voice – usually whispered by comparison, perfectionism, or that late-night scroll through Instagram. 😭
It makes sense that if we’re surrounding ourselves with comparison traps and unwelcome energies from social media that we’ll feel a little disjointed in our path.
Let’s break down some myths you might be writing into your journey — and why they’re not all they’re cracked up to be.
Here’s the thing about rushing to find your artistic voice: it’s like trying to force a flower to bloom before it’s ready!
The pressure to “pick your lane” often comes from watching other artists who seem to have it all figured out. But here’s what I’ve discovered in my journey as a singer-songwriter and performer — you’ll never find your style unless you start putting your art into the world.
Every time I release a song, I learn something new about my sound. Sometimes it’s in the way I naturally gravitate toward certain melodic patterns, or how my lyrics flow when I’m not overthinking them. Your style emerges through doing, not through planning.
Art style evolution is necessary. After all — evolution means changing through time!
Think of your favorite artists. Taylor Swift didn’t stay in country music forever. Picasso had his Blue Period before moving into cubism.
Your artistic voice grows as you do, shaped by every experience and emotion you collect along the way. And honestly, your fans will love seeing you grow.
Just see how everyone is loving the Chappell Roan transformation — her old videos are still on YouTube and people love going to the comments section sharing how much they’ve loved seeing her find her style and approach in music.
Honestly, it reminds me of a big sister seeing their younger sister grow throughout the years. She loves that she’s been alongside her the whole time, and loves seeing her find her voice, style, and personality in the process.
Not sure if you’re heading in the right direction? I’m here to reassure your artist’s heart: Subtle Signs You’re on the Right Path (Even If You’re Doubting) |
When exploring how to find your voice as an artist, remember that every ‘wrong turn’ is actually leading you closer to your truth. (It definitely doesn’t feel like this at the moment, though, and that’s totally normal).
Spending time trying to sound and look like my favorite artist would just stunt my growth.
So when I first started performing, STATiC told me to stick to an all-black look. And I love it because it helped me eventually find a more pronounced style without feeling like I’d already planted a look before I was ready.
It was like a stylish blank slate letting the lights, stage and sound do the work so I could better get a feeling of the style as I’d watch my performances back.
Creating a safe space to find your artistic voice means embracing the mess!
Back in acting school, my teachers would emphasize how important it was to embrace the mess. In fact, Jennifer, my acting teacher at the Esper Studio would call our first year the “dirty diaper phase!”
There’s a huge difference I feel when I see an actor who is trying to look and sound good, and one who is fully in the moment and present with the other, unafraid of what will happen next.
Your process as a whole will probably feel like complete chaos at one point or another.
The mess is where the magic happens.
Think of experimentation like cooking without a recipe. Sure, you might make something inedible once in a while, but you might also discover your signature dish.
Every time I write a new song or read for a new part, I learn something new about my creative process.

Your unique artistic expression carries echoes of every laugh, tear, and adventure you’ve lived through. Finding your voice as an artist means embracing all these parts of your story — even the parts you’ve been avoiding or rejecting.
Those late-night feelings that keep you awake? They’re artistic gold.
That quirky way you see the world? That’s your superpower.
The deepest hurts and heaviest shadows in your life are actually bridges connecting your art to hearts who’ve walked a similar path.
This is the sacred work of being an artist — creating spaces where others feel seen, held, and understood. People turn to art when they need permission to feel, to make sense of their emotions, to remember they’re not alone in their experience of being human and to find pieces of themselves reflected back in beautiful ways.
Many of us spend years trying to find our voices by looking outward. Studying other artists, collecting inspiration, trying to piece together the perfect puzzle.
But to truly find your artistic voice, you need to understand that everything you have is inside of you. The work is digging underneath the surface to uncover it, like an archeologist.
Your voice, the answers, are inside you — literally as you’re reading this! It’s shaped by the unique way you see the world, your values, experiences, point of view, and the messages your soul needs to share.
Sharing your inner world through art might feel scary at first. But when you’re brave enough to create from that authentic place within, your voice becomes impossible to ignore, both to others and to yourself. In my opinion, it’s worth every moment of vulnerability — this is why performing is my passion!
As you develop art style, you’ll notice patterns emerging naturally in your work. Suddenly, you’re making creative choices without second-guessing every decision.
Your art starts speaking through you rather than you forcing it to speak.
Your past should be a little cringe-worthy! That’s okay.
Each release taught me something new about my sound, my writing, and myself. Progress also isn’t always about getting “better,” but getting more authentic.
Either way, as long as you see a difference between what you’ve been doing a year ago, you’re on the right path. Progress, not perfection.
Remember: your artistic journey is pure magic. Need a reminder? Reconnect with that creative spirit of yours: 10 Quotes About Magic for Spell-Casting Creatives |
There’s a special kind of magic that happens when you’re aligned with your true creative voice. Creating stops feeling like a chore and becomes more like meeting up with your best friend for tea – you just can’t wait to dive into conversation.
Even on challenging days, that spark stays alive because you’re no longer forcing anything; you’re simply letting your authentic voice flow.
This isn’t to say that you don’t have days you’re completely exhausted — I definitely do. But it’s the concept that you feel more direction and focus on how to craft and shape what’s been bubbling up inside. It feels less like analysis paralysis and more like, “oh, I got this.”
The path to find your artistic voice is uniquely yours to wander. Some days you’ll skip ahead with confidence; others, you’ll take tiny steps with uncertainty. Both are perfectly okay. What matters is that you keep creating, keep experimenting, and keep trusting the process.
